Where to eat in Berlin: Cocolo Ramen Kreuzberg

Segue in Italiano.

It was one of my Tuesday_foodday (here some reviews made in the past 1 2 3 4) when I decided to finally go and meet Dennis. A friend from Bangkok who, a few years ago, decide to return to his homeland. During my holidays trip in the past we had some fun time together in the city. Both electronic music lover we went to few events together, but never had the chance to seat at a table and enjoy a meal. The weekend before while working Naturalmente, that is becoming the favorite spot for locals and people coming from the centre during the weekend. Guillaume, another Bangkok friends told me that he would be in town for few days. So we decided to make a reunion and finally share a meal.

Dennis is now busy working on his sunglasses brand Playn, so we reached him at his shop in Kreuzberg. An area of the city that since 5/6 years ago was the “upcoming place to be” for many, becoming soon the hot spot for tourist and part-time locals of the city. The area is mainly populated by Turkish and Middle East communities; bringing with them their culinary heritage. However, when it became a fashionable area many other restaurant, shops started to look for a spot to open their business.

Walking trough the area you will still feel that original atmosphere, a local market by the canal brings you back to the years when the area was populated by locals and immigrants due to its cheap rents and available spaces. Things changed a lot since then. Finding a space now in Kreuzberg can be a very difficult task and the rental prices have grown exponentially.

After a quick chat with Dennis with its surprise Guillaume came and we decided to go to Cocolo Ramen. A name that was mentioned to me many time by friends during my past visits but I never had the chance to go. Cocolo during the years have built the reputation of the best Ramen in town, with long queues and waiting time. So! Shooting two birds with one stone we went to their Kreuzberg branch.

Since it was a nice sunny day, the outdoor area was busy with workers of the area, so we opted for the indoor seating area. The guys did their best to replicate a Japanese Ramen restaurant. And to be honest they did a good job. The wooden interior is very warm and welcoming; as per the staff. We sat next to the prep area to check what was going on in the “backstage”. The kitchen team mainly Japanese was busy preparing the bowls to serve and the aromas coming form it were very inviting.

On the menu you will find mainly Ramen (what else) with some “appetizer” and drinks off course. I opted for a Tonkotsu Ramen lets say the traditional one made with pork belly and all fat wonders coming form it. Dennis got the same while Guillaume ordered a Wonton soup.

After a few minutes from our order the bowls were on the table. The look was proper. But with ramen and noodles soups in general “the devil is in the broth”. I armed my hands with chops stick and got a piece of the pork first and my mouth starter to watering (as it is while I am writing this review). It was good, very soft with all the flavors that I could remember from my visit in Japan.

Also the noodles were tasty and firm ad they should be. Finally the broth, I liked it; fat and tasty as it should be (it could have been even more fat, but that’s a personal taste).  I had also the chance to try the Wonton that after the Ramen didn’t spark any wow reaction, still they were nice. I will come back to Cocolo, maybe to try what are serving in the others branches. Meanwhile if you go let me know what you thin about it.

Dove mangiare a Berlino: Cocolo Ramen Kreuzberg
